Velika Kapa – Prenj

Because of its unforgettable viewpoint, Velika Kapa is one of the more prominent peaks of Prenj. Standing on the summit of Velika Kapa, you feel like a falcon soaring freely high above the valleys and other elevations of this mountain.
Velika Kapa rises above 2,000 metres, making it a notable and dominant peak by this criterion as well. The summit itself is the culmination of the Konjic Bjelašnica ridge. Its northern and eastern sides are rocky and very steep, while the other sides of the peak are grassy and gently undulating.
The approach to Velika Kapa from Rapti, and the time spent on the summit itself, will make you happy.
The approach is very pleasant, along grassy slopes and through forest vegetation of varying heights.
On the way to Velika Kapa, you will pass through carpets of flowers, accompanied by the buzzing of bees and an abundance of cheerful colours that will lift your spirits.
Apart from reaching the summit itself, the most joyful moment is reaching the pass to the left of Borova Glava. Here, you will be fascinated by the open view of Prenj’s vibrant panorama. Almost the entire array of high peaks of this mountain seems to dance right in front of you, just for your eyes.
It can be said that after this, the approach to the summit feels like passing through a ceremonial guard of honour, like a VIP path of happiness and adrenaline.
At the summit, above all, you are fascinated by the breathtaking view into the depths of Konjička Bijela. The views of Osobac, Otiš and Zelena Glava from Velika Kapa look impressive, especially in winter, when they seem like some Alpine peaks rising above 3,000 metres.
It is especially beautiful on days when valley fog covers the valleys around Prenj. At such times, the landscape before you looks like a sea dotted with numerous beautiful islands, whose shores plunge sharply into the sea of fog.
Recommended Approach
From Konjic, we take the paved road towards Boračko Lake. At the very exit of the suburban area, we turn right onto another paved road towards the Bijela Valley, where several small hamlets are scattered along the valley. At the end of the paved road, we continue along a poor-quality gravel road for the next 17 kilometres to the Rapti location. Along the way, there is a sign indicating the turn-off to the left towards Rapti, while the road continues further into the Tisovica Valley, which can only be reached by a 4x4 off-road vehicle.
DESCRIPTION
We begin our journey at the Rapti mountain facility (PD Borašnica), from where our destination for the day is already visible. We follow the marked trail along a wide gravel road for several hundred metres, before soon turning right into the forest, through which we continue for approximately twenty minutes. Emerging onto open meadows is accompanied by gradually opening views, extensive habitats of mountain flora, and pleasant hiking without any difficult obstacles along the way.
For the next 45 minutes, the hike is very enjoyable, occasionally passing through areas of dwarf pine, with the intense scents of Herzegovinian (Mediterranean) plants.
The emergence onto the main ridge (one hour from the start) of Prenj's Bjelašnica (a long ridge culminating in the Velika Kapa summit) is accompanied by spectacular views of the Prenj massif, especially Cetina, while to the right of it, directly across the Neretva River, Čvrsnica stretches out before you as if in the palm of your hand.
For the next hour and a half, the route continues along a broad ridge (oriented northwest–southeast), following a marked trail to the summit of Velika Kapa (2004 m). Hiking along this ridge is one of the greatest pleasures you can experience in the mountains. Moving gently along the trail, on the right, across the Tisovica Valley, the view extends towards the giants of Prenj (from left): Otiš, Zelena Glava, Vjetrena Brda, Erać, Lupoglav; Kerać; Veliki Prenj, Cetina...
Depending on the season, we will have Alpine winter views, or a spring landscape streaked with snow, or, alternatively, warm autumn colours, whose beauty will carry us all the way to the summit.
And as for the view from the summit of Velika Kapa towards the Konjička Bijela Valley (1,500 metres deep), it is an understatement to say that it is breathtaking. The depth inspires respect. Directly across the valley is Osobac – an isolated peak, along whose northwestern ridge runs one of the longest via ferratas in the Balkans – as much as 1,300 metres in length and with a vertical elevation gain of 700 metres. From the summit, Sivadije can also be clearly seen – another very interesting part of Prenj, whose diversity and unique relief leave no one indifferent.
We can return by the same route, which is also the easiest option.
It is possible to continue along one of the routes towards the interior of Prenj.
One hour from the summit, we can reach the Vrutak bivouac (to obtain the key, contact PD Borašnica from Konjic), which is potentially an excellent starting point for numerous ascents.
From the summit to the mountain hut (open-type) at Jezerce takes one hour and 45 minutes.
